Gurdaspur is an important historical city in Punjab. Guriyaji founded this city in the 17th century after taking the land from Jats. This city lies in the north most part of Punjab. Geographicaly Gurdaspur is located between Raavi River and Beas River. It comprises of hilly terrain and undulating plains. Its  hilly ranges are between 380 and 930 meters above sea level. The main ranges include Rata Dhar, Dhula Dhar and Silai Dhar.

Places to Visit in Gurdaspur

Gurdaspur offers its visitors a wide range of attraction. Most of the attractions are ancient and have historical importance. The most visited places in the city are as follows:

Barath Sahib


Barath Sahib is a gurudwara which is related to Baba Sri Chand who is the elder son of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Baba Sri CHand was born on 9 Bahdon, 1551 Samvat in Sultanpur Lodhi which dates back to 1494 AD. He was the one who started Udassi Sect in Punjab.

Achal Sahib


Situated at a distance of 8 kms from Batala Achal Sahib is located on the Batala- Jalandar road. This place is related to Guru Nanak Dev and Lord Karthik who is the son of Lord Shiva and Parvathi.
Achaleshwar Temple
This is an ancient temple. The temple has a Shiv Linga which is formed horizontally. This is the only temple in India where the linga is found horizontally.

Guru Dwara Sri Kandh Sahib


Guru Dwara Sri kandh SahibThis is the holy place where Guru Nanak Dev ji got married. In 1487 AD he came here from Sultanpur Lodhi as a groom to get married.

Dhinapur Shrine


This place has  some mythological importance. It is believed that one who wants to have a male child has to take bath in the baoli in the moonlight. Dhinapur ShrineHis/her wish to have a son is granted.

Mukeshwar Temple


This temple is located on the bank of River Raavi and is about 8 kms northeast from the Shahpur Kandi. It is believed that Pandavas lived in this holy temple during their exile. Mukesran mela is conducted in the April month of every year. Tourists from nearby places visit the mela to have fun.

Fish Park


This park is the place to relax and have fun. This park is located in the middle of residential buildings in the Civil lanes. This park is well maintained and manicured. Some years back this people could get to buy fishes here. But today there are no fishes only a statue of the fish can be found in this park.

Shahpur kandi Fort


This famous fort of Gurdaspur offer a panoramic view of the Raavi River from the top. This fort was built by Bhao Singh in the 16th century. Today the fort is in ruins because of no maintenance .But one can still see the glory of ancient Kings in what remains of the fort.

Ranjith Sagar DamRanjit Sagar Dam


Built on the River Raavi, the Ranjit Sagar Dam is the biggest hydroelectrical project in Punjab. It is also known as the Thein Dam and is the highest earth filled dam in India.

How to reach Gurdaspur

Reaching Gurdaspur is easy. One can plan their trip either through road, train or by flight. The best way to reach the city would be by bus because the city is very well connected by the roadways.

By Air


Gurdaspur doesnot have any airport. The nearest airport is the Shri Guru Ram Das Jee airport in Amritsar which is around 70 kms from the city. Next nearest airport to the city is the Chandigarh airport. It takes five hours from the city to reach the Chandigarh airport.

By Train


The railway station in Gurdaspur is located in the center of the city. The trains from Amritsar, Pathankot, Jammu, New Delhi and Chandigarh run to Gurdaspur.

By Road


Punjab State Road Transportation runs buses regularly to Gurdaspur from Amritsar, Jalandhar, Dalhousie, Ludhiana, Chandigarh, Batinda and New Delhi.

Best Time to Visit Gurdaspur

The temperature of the city rises up to 44 degree Celsius during summer months and in winters the city stays cool between 6 and 20 degree Celsius. The best time to visit city would be in the months of November through March.
